UPGRADING TP-LINK ARCHER C7 AC1750 TO USE WITH OPENWRT

Why OpenWRT?

One of my home access points is TP-Link Archer C7. I purchased it to get all benefits of the 5Ghz 802.11ac standard for the laptop and 2.4Ghz band for the older devices. However, it was never working for me well:

  • In 5Ghz band Apple devices were working very unstable
  • Sometime i had to reboot router because of wifi stability issues. After reboot it was working until next issue. There are no debug options/logs in the native firmware.
  • Device was spamming network with STP packets and some other data, no way to disable.
  • After upgrading to the new firmware versions i had to reconfigure it completely. And in fact difference between regullary updated versions was minimal
  • Native firmware configurable only via web interface, probably backdoors are included

So i decided to reflash it to the OpenWRT and found, that i am “happy” owner of the TP-Link Archer C7v1, with AR1A (v1) variant of QCA9880 chip, not supported in the open source ath10k driver. So there is no way to use 5Ghz with OpenWRT at all. Only good thing that 5Ghz chip is not soldered on the board, but connected to the PCIe mini card socket. So i decided to replace it.

It seems you need to also run the newer versions of the QCA16X4A Drivers too, my laptop came with ones over a year old, I am having better luck with 12.0.0.488 available at the bottom of this page.

TP-Link also pointed me to this file for Qualcomm Drivers :

The beta firmware didn't work for me either. It made the router restart instead of locking up.

I found a solution from a Killer Networking rep on the Gigabyte board: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...s-1535-disconnecting-under-heavy-load.800178/
Use old version of driver:

TP-Link Archer C7 AC1750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router

TP-Link Archer C7 AC1750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router

Hardware specifications
TP-LINK Archer C7 has a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9558 processor, running at 720 MHz, with 128 MB of RAM memory and 16 MB of storage space. It offers support for all the modern networking standards, including 802.11ac, which means that this router offers two wireless networks: one for the 2.4 GHz frequency and one for the 5 GHz frequency. The maximum theoretical bandwidth is of 450Mbps on the 2.4 GHz frequency and 1300Mbps on the 5 GHz frequency, leading to a total of 1.75Gbps. One aspect that is not exactly obvious is that this wireless router has a total of 6 antennas. There are three external antennas for the 5 GHz wireless frequency and 3 internal antennas for the 2.4 GHz frequency. You can see their positioning in the diagram below.

TP-Link Archer C7 router crash

Same problem here. I can reproduce the problem quite regularly. Basically, if you only use the wifi lightly it will be fine. But once you max out the wifi, it will crash the router. For me to make the router crash, I just boot up the laptop. Go to a network share, and transfer a large file (1GB+) from 1 network share to another. It'll crash the router within a min. If for some reason it doesn't, then while the file is transferring, go to beta.speedtest.net and do a network speed test while the transfer is going on in the background. It then crashes (almost 100% certainly while doing the upload test). I'm on a:

TP-Link Archer C7 v2 (Canadian version (CA))
Laptop: Dell XPS 9360 (Kabe Lake) - Latest BIOS
Wireless: Killer Wifi 1535 - Latest Drivers (both tried Dell's latest, and Killers Latest).

I can't use the beta TP-LINK firmware cuz I'm on the CA edition...

Seems to me the issue is with the Killer Wifi, not playing nicely, as my Archer C7 had like a 250 day uptime, then crashed over 8 times since xmas with this new laptop. That said, TP-Link (& QCA) is a bit at fault, as their router shouldn't crash when one of the clients is not playing nicely.

TP-Link needs to provide a stable firmware update ASAP so that their router doesn't crash with naughty clients. And Killer needs to provide an update Driver ASAP so their WINDOWS CLIENTS don't be naughty and crash AP's.

TP-Link Archer C7

I bought this router (c7) at Xmas time and the thing has been driving me nuts. Router just crashed everytime, shortly after using my laptop with the infamous Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4A network card. I was using the latest Canadian v2 firmware which was the 161031. Thank goodness I stumbled upon this thread , as the people I opened a ticket with had no clue. With that said, I installed the latest beta for Canada and the router is running admirably, besides the random occasional drops with my Nexus 6p. I am getting great speeds both wired and wireless with good range. Any idea when this beta will be finalized? Thanks for sharing your stories everyone! If it wasn't for people like you, these thing would never get resolved. Also thanks for the beta, admin. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to future releases.

Archer C7 router crashed - Available Solution

Archer C7 router crashed

I've had an Archer C7 router for about a year and it worked perfectly. Suddenly, it started having problems: the system light would go on, and I could no longer connect to it via wifi or ethernet. The only way to reconnect was to turn it off and and back on.
I contacted TP Link and got a replacement. I installed it, and in 3 days the same issue started happening. I have tried updating the firmware and resetting the router to factory settings, but the problem keeps happening.
When I connect my devices directly to the internet jack on the wall, it works perfectly. I also tried connecting an older router that I had (from another brand) and it worked for several days with no issues.
I have no idea what the problem might be, and would appreciate help solving this issue.
